10/12/2024 Serious Saturday Safety
This has been just an awful two weeks for the Southeast due to Hurricane destruction. We all need to be ready in case something happens- at least with food and water.
Here is a link for FEMA and what you need to have ready:
A few years ago I was driving home and on my street I saw very young children playing in the street with outdoor ride on toys. This was instead of on the sisewalk-no adult present. I mean like an 18 month old, 3 year old, 5 year old! I pulled over and went to front door and the mother came to the door. She said, oh they're just playing and indicated the 5 year old was watching them. I told her they have to be supervised and she said -they're fine. I told her no and if I see them in the street again- I will report you to the local and state authorities for neglect. It must have worked because I never saw them in the street again.
I have also seen young school age children just cross 2 lane streets without a stoplight and they don’t look before crossing.
As a result we do not go to appointments or shopping except between about 10AM to 2PM to avoid children that may be waiting for buses.
So this is anecdotal but I have observed similar behaviors in other states. Now with all the damages and debris around after recent hurricanes and tornados plus trucks for repairs etc- I hope the children are kept safe from harm.
Here are some strategies for teaching safety skills to children with autism1234:
Create social stories: Short narratives that describe social situations and appropriate responses.
Use visual schedules: Help children with autism understand the sequence of activities or steps involved in a task.
Modeling and role-playing
Use video modeling
Naturalistic teaching
Create rules and boundaries
Consider the child’s language comprehension ability and developmental age when determining how much supervision is required to keep him or her safe.
Teach your child to swim without floaties.
Use visual aids to help them understand safety concepts.
Practice safety skills in real-life settings, such as at home or in the community.
Thank you,
Sandra
