I started paying into Social Security, around 1970. I distinctly remember that sometimes more was taken out of my check in different kinds of taxes- often more was taken out in taxes than what I got in my check!
So what is the history of Social Security, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid?
I have worked across the country and as part of my job, I was required to verify a person's method of payment.
So often a person was sure they had Medicare but often they had a Medicare Advantage plan.
About two years ago my husband and I were in a general procedure waiting room. Sadly, I watched and could partially hear as around 10 persons were called to the check-in desk. In that short time, all of those that checked in were told their procedures were not approve by their insurance. Many were very upset! Finally, my husband was called to the desk and his was approved as he had regular Medicare.
In addition, there are many commercials and phone calls at this time a year.
You have the power in you to go to https://www.usa.gov/social-security to get the step-by-step process started. Be sure you have paper and pen, your driver license with your current address. Also have your social security card ready.
The reason for this is your ID will be verified as part of a secure process. Having a laptop/tablet ready is also handy.
This is a secure step by step process that takes a while to get done but you can help by making sure you have everything that is on their list.
The last time I helped someone wth this process, the person kept being asked about options. The questions are asked a few times as the system checks for consistency.
You can do it, having someone with you can be helpful.
You can go to a Social Security office with an appointment but you may want to give the online method a try first.
Now I feel I must share aome things I have seen over the last 20+ years.

Over the years, the saddest thing that I have seen is persons that work constantly, all their lives, but "under the table" or their "significant other" passed away and they could not get benefits because they had not paid into the system.
**************************
What works best is to go through their check list and after you have everything, then make the final verification.
This week I will share some information.
If even one person is helped then it was worth it.
